Most of an individual’s personal ecological footprint lies in their food choices. It takes about 10 calories of food to produce 1 calorie of food in the modern fossil fuel based global food production system. Most people are unaware of where their food was produced, by whom, and under what conditions. There are also ethical concerns over farmworkers’ rights, captivity and treatment of animals raised for food, and the large scale destruction of significant ecosystems needed to sustain human health and survival. With so many problems comes many solutions. Changing where you purchase food and from whom, shifting away from specific items in your diet, understanding labels and claims on packaging are some of the ways participants will learn in order to create a more sustainable food system.
