About this Event
Graduation is always a special time for the SAGE team as we say goodbye to many of our students who have touched our lives either through Study Abroad, Global Distinction, or the Community College Initiative (CCI) Program. This year was particularly unique because it was the first time that our CCI students had the opportunity to walk in the official graduation ceremony on May 5. Since 2016 we have been welcoming CCI students to Valencia, which is an exchange sponsored by the Department of State in cooperation with Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA). It is a highly competitive scholarship for international students to spend up to one academic year at a U.S. community college to complete a certificate program and make an impact in our local community by volunteering and promoting cultural exchange. This year we hosted 12 students from Brazil, the Dominican Republic, Ghana, South Africa, Turkey, India, and Indonesia. Our CCI graduation events included:
Although we are sad to say goodbye, we look forward to hearing about their future initiatives and the impact they will make in their home countries with their new leadership and technical skills gained at Valencia.
Spring 2024 graduation was also special for our Global Distinction students as we graduated our largest group of 17 Global Citizens and Ambassadors! This is a testament to how the program is growing and helping Valencia students add an international dimension to their studies to prepare them for entering a global workforce. This semester we participated in so many unique Global Citizen Capstone presentations ranging from e-portfolios to international research projects. For the first time ever, two of our Community College Initiative (CCI) students enrolled in the Global Distinction program, Vishal Kumar and Dailin Michelle Maria Galvez, earned the Global Citizen medallion to wear at graduation. An impressive number of Honors students also earned this prestigious distinction which we awarded at the Honors College Graduation Recognition Event on May 3. And finally, we are so proud to announce that Valencia’s Spring 2024 Distinguished Graduate, Nyauni Crowelle, also completed our program graduating as a Citizen.
This year we also decided to recognize the achievements of our Study Abroad students by providing them with a blue and green cord to wear at graduation, which symbolizes the colors of the world.
We wish all of our SAGE students a bright future filled with global adventures!
